«Celebrare il pianoforte, i pianisti, i compositori e soprattutto gli ascoltatori. Perciò il mondo ha bisogno di un “Piano Day”» spiega Nils Frahm, artista tedesco promotore di un’iniziativa internazionale che si tiene in questi giorni in tante città, da Londra a Berlino, da Los Angeles a Phoenix, da Seul a Pietroburgo, da Beirut a Shangai. E per la prima volta anche a Trieste: appuntamento venerdì alle 20.20 all’auditorium della Casa della Musica con il concerto dello sloveno Bowrain, classe 1983, compositore contemporaneo, pianista e produttore nelle cui performance il suono del pianoforte si lega a quello delle basi ritmiche elettroniche. L’evento è organizzato da Yeah! – Young European Artists Hub, l’ingresso è di 9 euro con biglietto acquistabile a partire da un’ora prima del concerto, in Via dei Capitelli 3 (consigliata prenotazione all’indirizzo europeanartistshub@gmail.com).
«Con la mia musica creo un’atmosfera che si ricollega alle esperienze della vita reale, – racconta Bowrain – per questo amo lavorare con artisti che provengono da campi differenti e mi stimola musicare immagini in movimento». Il pianista e compositore di Lubiana descrive la scena musicale della sua città come «ricca di talenti ma troppo piccola per chi è davvero ambizioso. Vivere a Lubiana ma lavorare all’estero: se si riesce a fare questo, si ha una buona combinazione di grandi opportunità e buona qualità della vita». A Trieste sarà il suo primo concerto: «Sono passato in città varie volte – dice – ma soltanto per un caffè o per prendere un treno per raggiungere altre mete italiane. Credo sia una città molto attenta all’arte e alla cultura, con una scena musicale che sta crescendo. Triestini come Marco Valvassori con il suo Valva Booking stanno organizzando grandi cose. E ovviamente ci sarà molto altro di cui non sono a conoscenza».
“Piano Day” è un evento annuale che si tiene in tutto il mondo per celebrare il pianoforte: «Grazie al compositore e pianista Nils Frahm e altri come Hauscka e Peter Broderick – aggiunge Bowrain – si è riusciti a proporre concerti di piano a un’audience più vasta, uscendo dall’ambiente strettamente di classica per raggiungere un grande sviluppo tecnologico e musicale».
A novembre è uscito «Distracted» per l’etichetta Kapa Records: «Riunisce i miei pezzi di solo piano e composizioni elettroniche, con la collaborazione del chitarrista e produttore sloveno Mario Babojelič e il batterista tedesco Robert Nitschke. La nostra prossima performance sarà in estate al 59esimo Jazz Festival a Lubiana».
Dei suo ascolti dice: «La prima e principale influenza è stata la musica classica, assorbita in giovane età. E da quel momento in poi è difficile dire cosa non mi abbia influenzato! Vivendo in posti diversi (Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Philadelphia, Venezia…) ho avuto l’occasione di conoscere e collaborare con grandi artisti che hanno contribuito a forgiarmi. È impossibile separare l’arte dalla vita, così può essere anche un minimo dettaglio della giornata a ispirarti. Come nei sogni». Guardando al futuro, Bowrain conclude: «Vorrei fare un album che sia un capolavoro, uno che non mi venga a noia col passare del tempo. Poi mi piacerebbe comporre per qualche importante film internazionale. Ad aprile suonerò al Westway Lab in Portogallo, allo Spring Break in Polonia e Sharpe Festival in Slovacchia. Sto anche lavorando a un mio progetto parallelo, Phila, una collaborazione con il chitarrista e compositore portoghese Pedro Lucas (Madeiros/ Lucas)».

Greetings, can you give us a brief explanation of who you are and what you do? (How would you like to be introduced or described to a new audience?)
Hello. I am a Slovenian artist Bowrain currently based in Ljubljana. My main work is focusing on composing, often using piano as my tool. I think that with my music I am creating an atmosphere that can be related to a real – life experience. This is why I like to work with artists from different art fields. I especially like to create music for moving picture.
What can you tell me about the musical scene of Ljubljana?
Musical scene in Ljubljana is full of talent but it’s too small for ambitious artist. In order to make good work you have to move and work abroad. If you can reach this point (live in Ljubljana, and work abroad) I think it can be a great combination of good opportunities and good quality life.
Have you already played in Trieste? What do you know about the city?
I have never played in Trieste before, this will be my first time. I have been to Trieste many times but just for a coffee or when I took the train to other parts of Italy J Apart from that I must admit that I am not an expert in knowing this city…I believe Trieste had always great cultural side and a lot of focus on art in general. I am starting to realize that the music scene is also growing. Guys like Marco Valva from Valva Booking are doing great things for music scene in this city…I guess there’s much more things happening in Trieste which I am not aware of.
A brief explanation of what “Piano Day” is.
“Piano Day” is an annual worldwide event that celebrates piano. It was founded by a German composer and pianist Nils Frahm three years ago I believe. I think that through composers like Nils and like – minded artists (Hauscka, Peter Broderick…) piano is being introduced to a wide audience. It was able to jump out of strict classical environment and it has reached a big technological and musical development.
What can we expect to see at your Trieste show at Casa della Musica on March 30th?

What can you tell me about your last album “Distracted”?
My album Distracted was released in November 2017 on a label Kapa Records. It’s a two-sided album that combines my solo piano / electronic work, and on the other hand the collaboration with Slovenian guitarist and producer Mario Babojelič and German drummer Robert Nitschke. Our next performance will happen during 59th Jazz Festival in Ljubljana in the coming summer.

What was the music that influenced you and shaped your own vision?
I guess my first and main influence was classical music that happened at the early stage of my life. After that it’s hard to say what hasn’t influenced me…! I guess great artists I have had the chance to meet and work with, have shaped down my vision the most. Also living abroad (Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Philadelphia, Venice…).
It’s impossible to separate art from life, so it can be the slightest moment during the day that can influence your life. It’s like in dreams, right? (usually we dream about the daily events but there are also bigger things…)
As a musician, what do you feel like you still need to accomplish?
Hm…I don’t know really…I think I want to make a great album! One that I won’t get bored of through time ;). Also, I would really like to work on international film project as a film composer.
What’s happening next, is there anything upcoming and in the works already?
In April I am going to play three important solo concerts during three European showcases: Westway Lab in Portugal, Spring Break in Polland and Sharpe Festival in Slovakia. I am also releasing some music with my side project Phila, which is a collaboration with Portuguese guitarist and composer Pedro Lucas (from MADEIROS/LUCAS).
