Venerdì dalle 19.30 il Teatro Miela presenta “Sound&vision session #01” aperitivo con le ultime migliori produzioni video della scena elettronica; alle 21.30 sul palco Filastine + Nova, dalle 23.30 spazio a Dj Cannibal Se-lecter & Jazza di Electrosacher Collective, interiors e vjing di FAAAB.
Grey Filastine è un artista audiovisivo fautore di un’elettronica grintosa dove le frequenze del dubstep si scontrano con la ritmica world più ricercata, mescolando percussioni suonate dal vivo, gli strumenti acustici e i samplers delle voci e dei rumori presi dalla strada. Losangelino di nascita, gira il mondo per studiare e registrare musiche e ritmi. Il suo lavoro spesso ospita la cantante/rapper javanese Nova che, assieme alla violoncellista d’avanguardia Brent Arnold, lo accompagna sia in studio che dal vivo. Dopo l’acclamato debutto «Burn It» (2006), nel 2009 pubblica «Dirty Bomb», che lo porta in tour tra i cinque continenti. Nel 2012 esce «£00T», recensito benissimo dalla critica internazionale e affiancato da alcuni video pluripremiati. Al seguito parte un tour mondiale e nel 2013 «Looted», un album di remix.
Filastine venerdì scorso stava suonando a Parigi, in un club non molto distante dal Bataclan. Sulla sua pagina Facebook ha scritto un post a riguardo…
«Non riesco a dire nulla di più succinto di quanto ho scritto al momento. L’importante ora è affrontare il problema. Siamo tutti danni collaterali schiacciati tra due disgustose ideologie: la monocultura capitalista sempre in espansione ed il suo supposto nemico, ironicamente finanziato dal nostro consumo di petrolio».
Gli Eagles of Death Metal (e altre band come i Foo Fighters) hanno cancellato i loro tour europei. Voi avete cambiato i vostri piani?
«Non mi è stato necessario cancellare date. Infatti la prossima settimana ritorneremo a Parigi per fare un intervento musicale al COP21 Climate Summit. Non sembra molto rischioso e, in ogni caso, non è forse il lavoro dell’artista prendersi dei rischi?».
Che spettacolo portate a Trieste?
«Non ci nascondiamo dietro ad un mucchio di lampeggianti ingranaggi elettronici: ci troverete a percuotere strumenti veri e ad interagire con il pubblico. I visual sono narrativi, nello stile del cinema più che di uno spettacolo da vj».
Conosce la musica italiana?
«Avete una grande scena musicale che però ha una scarsa visibilità fuori dall’Italia, in particolare voglio citare gli Aucan che hanno fatto un grande remix di un nostro pezzo».
Che tecnologie usate dal vivo?
«Ci sono alcuni elementi high-tech, inclusi alcuni software che sincronizzano i visual all’audio. E alcuni elementi davvero low-tech come un carrello della spesa e un tamburello. Nova usa un processore vocale realtime e un looping system. L’obiettivo è unire la tecnologia ai nostri desideri umani, analogici».
La sua collaborazione con Nova?
«Ci siamo incontrati a Giacarta circa cinque anni fa e abbiamo deciso di lavorare assieme soprattutto perché condividevamo una filosofia. Lentamente ha preso un ruolo sempre più ampio nel progetto, ha cominciato come ospite alla voce, ma ora collabora anche alle produzioni video e ha un ruolo attivo sul palco. Lavorare con Nova ha creato un’ancora a Filastine nella regione del Pacifico, portandoci sempre più tour in Asia e Australia».
La vostra musica è in parte strumentale. Allo stesso tempo tenete molto al messaggio. Con quali espedienti lo esprimete?
«È più efficace comunicare messaggi con i visual che con la musica. Inoltre, le azioni parlano più forte delle parole, così cerchiamo di essere consapevoli del modo in cui ci muoviamo nel mondo, delle persone con cui scegliamo di collaborare e anche i luoghi in cui decidiamo di suonare sono parte del messaggio».
Quale fase del suo lavoro le piace di più: registrare i dischi o andare in tour?
«Risposta facile: andare in tour in giro per il mondo. Tutti quelli che verranno al concerto si renderanno conto che Filastine è un gruppo da performance, la dimensione live è quella in cui rendiamo meglio. Comporre è gratificante, ma può essere un lavoro molto solitario».
Prossimi progetti?
«Una serie di quattro lavori audiovisivi, ognuno con un tema simile sviluppato in situazioni diverse, quello del rifiuto di un lavoro degradante. Una specie di ep con video e musica, da far uscire nei prossimi mesi».

(Elisa Russo) On November the 13th you had a gig in Paris, nearby the Bataclan, I read on your Facebook official page “(…) I should leave my editorializing for a more sober moment, but fuck religious fundamentalism, also fuck the resource wars/invasions that fuel much of this anger, but which are no excuse for this imbecilic random murder”. It’s not easy to ask you something about that, but it’s difficult to start from other subject too, so… would you say something about this huge tragedy?
(Grey Filastine) I can’t say anything more succinct about the attacks than I did in that moment. What matters now is that we confront this problem. We are all collateral damage squeezed between two nasty ideologies: between the expanding capitalist monoculture, and it’s supposed enemy, the Salafist flat-earth fools, who are ironically financed by our petrol consumption.
The Eagles of Death Metal (and other bands such as Foo Fighters) have canceled their tour plans in Europe. Have you decide to change some of your plans/movement after the attack?
It didn’t occur to me to cancel any gigs. In fact we’ll return to Paris next week to make sound interventions at the COP21 Climate Summit. It doesn’t seem very risky, anyway, isn’t it the job of artists to take risks?
What kind of performance you’ll bring in Trieste, Italy?
We definitely don’t hide behind a bunch of blinking electronic gear, you’ll find us banging on instruments and interacting with the audience. The visuals are narrative, more in the style of live cinema than VJ.
And what do you think about Italy, what do you know about our country? Do you know of any Italian bands?

Regarding the structure in your live sets, what technologies are you currently using?
There are some high-tech elements, including some custom software to sync the visuals to audio events. and some very low-tech elements, like a shopping cart and marching drums. Nova uses a realtime vocal processing & looping system. The goal is to hack technology to our analog human desires.
Tell me about your collaboration with Nova.
We met in a Jakarta about five years ago and decided to work together mostly because of a shared philosophy. She has slowly taken a larger role in the project, she started as a guest vocalist, but now collaborates on the video productions and has an active role onstage. Working with Nova has created an anchor for Filastine in the Pacific region, bringing more tours in Asia and Australia.
Your music is partially instrumental. What devices do you use to communicate your message?
It’s more effective to communicate messages with visuals than music. Also, actions speak louder than words, so we try to be aware of the way that we move through the world, the people we choose to collaborate with and the venues that we play are also part of that message.
What part of your job do you like better: creating and recording your music or touring around the world?
Easy answer: touring around the world. Anyone that comes to the gig will understand that Filastine is a performance group, it is what we do best. Composing is a rewarding, but it can be a very lonely job.
What’s next?
A series of four audiovisual works, each one with a similar scrip in a different situation, that of a refusal to do degrading work. You can call it an “EP” of videos & music tracks, to be released over the coming months.
